The History of Link Manufacturing

Link is a privately-owned company headquartered in Sioux Center, Iowa. For over four decades, Link® has been committed to engineering premium solutions for commercial vehicles and equipment that provide industry leading value for our customers in areas such as reliability, durability and overall driver well-being. This devotion started in 1980 with one truck driver searching for a better ride. The result of his efforts was Cabmate®, a revolutionary cab air suspension system. Today, Cabmate® is the standard in premium cab suspensions, and Link® supplies more OEM cab suspensions than anyone else in the world.

Link’s proficiency in heavy-duty cab suspensions fueled a desire to diversify and expand into a wider range of specialty suspension products for commercial vehicles. In 1997, Link introduced self-steering lift axles and entered this emerging market segment. Today, Link’s family of Auxiliary Suspensions (lift axles) provides customers with wide ranging steer and non-steer applications and industry leading installation, reliability and value.

In 2002, Link expanded its product categories to include Chassis Suspensions through the introduction of UltraRide, a line of light and medium duty drive axle suspensions for commercial vehicles. Initial models were aimed at new vehicle ship-through and up-fitter applications, but soon OEM interest grew and more applications were developed.

In 2012, Link® further expanded its manufacturing footprint and Chassis Suspension product category into vocational and specialty vehicles through the newly formed Link Suspensions of Canada, LP (Link’s Canadian affiliate). Located in Nisku (Edmonton) Alberta, this operation specializes in the design and manufacture of single and multi-axle suspensions, especially the Air Link® Walking Beam suspension. Used in vocational, severe service and military applications these on and off highway suspensions range in capacity up to 45,000 pounds per axle.

Through the years Link has also diversified into specialty (non-suspension) products, although still focused on commercial vehicle applications. Those product lines include Cat’s Eye® Tire Pressure Maintenance System, and a family of Cargo Management Products. Link also provides Contract Manufacturing services for our customers, providing weldments and assemblies to the same level of quality, service and support they’ve grown to expect of Link.

Cabmate was initially developed in 1980 when truck driver Bill Nibbelink was searching for a more comfortable ride. Bill built the first cab air ride suspension for his red class 8 truck, and then started making additional units in his garage. The result of his efforts was Cabmate and its popularity quickly became evident.
